Reducing the size and weight of the electronics in an archival tag so it can be attached to an Atlantic salmon smolt (juvenile) has been a top priority for Lotek Wireless of St John's, Newfoundland, since 2006. In May 2011, the company's newly produced two-gram tag was fitted onto 215 smolts that were released from the Campbellton River into the North Atlantic. This spring, five per cent of them are expected to swim back to the river where they will be collected in the counting fence trap.
