Shallow waters for Thurn Group supplied survey system

Established in 2011 as Thurne Hydrographic Ltd, the THURN Group has worked with many clients including offshore operations companies, survey services providers and survey equipment manufacturers. The company is based near Norwich, UK, and has wide-ranging market experience with survey sonars and ancillary equipment in the ports, oil and gas and renewables sectors, worldwide. In early spring 2021, Storm Geomatics-an employee-owned hydrographic surveying company specialising in river surveys and watercourse surveys in the UK -was approached by an existing client to carry out topographic and bathymetric surveys on the River Aire at the village of Newlay, situated northwest of Leeds, Yorkshire. The surveys were part of the Newlay Remedial Works Project overseen by the UK Environmental Agency. The purpose of the work was to understand the geometry of the riverbed and banks to enable Storm's consulting engineer client to make various interventions to ensure the stability of the existing embankments and the future remedial works required for the recently collapsed Newlay Weir.
