U.S. Army Forms THAAD Air Defense Unit

The U.S. Army has formed the first high-altitude air defense unit. This unit will be equipped with systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and other weapons inside or outside the atmosphere. Alpha Battery, 4th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, was officially formed at Fort Bliss on May 28 and hasrnreceived the first Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system. THAAD is the first missile defense system deployed by the United States capable of reaching targets outside the atmosphere. The new unit is expected to completely field THAAD by next year.
