The use of adaptive antennas in cellular mobile radio systems is considered to be one of the most important measrues to increase capacity. The considered adaptive antenna concept is applied to the well-known TD-CDMA mobile radio air interface. TD-CDMA is adopted by ETSI for the UTRA TDD mode and is one of the candidates considered by ITU for IMT-2000. In the receivers of a TD-CDMA system the intracell multiple access interference (MAI) is eliminated by joint detection. This detection algorithm also offers the advantageous possibility of considering the intercell interference convariance matrix in order to enchance system performance. In this paper, a multi-antenna receiver structure with the capability to estimate the covariance matrix of the received intercell multiple access interference (MAI) is presented. The benefits of taking into account the interference covariance matrix both in channel estimation and data detection are shown by simulations. The directional channel models applied in the simualtions are derived from measured channel impulse responses.
