Slowly but surely, British policymakers and private developers have realized that constructing new spaces of urbane consumption and living is not enough. Bricks and mortar alone will not ensure a profitable and sustainable urban renaissance. Property-based regeneration and gentrification strategies, it is increasingly believed, must be accompanied by policies that ensure that residents, businesses and tourists feel safe and secure when they step outside of their 'fortified' homes, offices, hotels and tourist attractions. Otherwise certain behaviours, individuals, groups and 'signs of disorder' will put the desired groups off from spending more money and time there. Following this logic, spaces across the city have witnessed the interweaving of construction and refurbishment with policing and Anti-Social Behaviour (ASB) reduction strategies such as CCTV, increased foot patrols and the now infamous Anti-Social Behaviour Order (ASBO). It is in this light that Securing an Urban Renaissance has attempted to understand the rolling out of regeneration, crime and social policies and their intermeshing within British cities.
