Reading through the new edition of a reputable theological textbook for the first time the other day, I became increasingly surprised - and even troubled - at how dated the work felt. It was not that the list of contributors was in any way impoverished: by contrast, it included some of the most significant names in recent systematic theology. Nor was the contributors' treatment of the various doctrinal loci in any way objectionable: the accounts of the tradition and its history were relatively unexceptionable; the contemporary challenges recounted were perceptively observed; and the theological solutions offered to those challenges were healthily contestable. And yet still there seemed to be something amiss, even something remiss, in what I was reading.
