Mats Larsson is a Swedish management consultant, who writes with the clarity and firmness of purpose one would hope to find from someone with his background. All the challenges are listed, from 'peak oil' and the need for more rapid and widespread diffusion of renewable energy technologies, to more urgent changes in general consumption patterns and energy use. The author notes the four archetypal scenarios in the literature: Business as Usual; Muddling Through; Environmental and Economic Disaster; and the Nirvana of Ecological Dream. He concludes that a massive and urgent transformation is required to avoid disaster and successfully arrive in a prosperous future. He also concludes that we have barely begun the transformation; the challenge is widely underestimated; and that detailed planning ahead is required to avoid panic, and to take account of long lead times for the available and consistent technologies and other resources.
