FIVE ITALIAN ARTICLES WRITTEN BY THE YOUNG FRANCO MODIGLIANI (1937-1938)

Franco Modigliani (1919-2003) enrolled at the faculty of Law at the University of Rome in 1935. On different occasions, between 1937 and 1938, he published papers on those issues he further discussed in his laurea dissertation Regulation and Standardization of Budgets, Accounting and of Cost Price Calculation. Theoretical Aspects and Implementation in Foreign Countries. Four of the five articles Modigliani published at that time are here presented for the first time in their English translation, enriching our knowledge of his initial formative path. They deal with price controls, political prices and corporative prices, autarky and the international division of labour. These papers, entering the main policy debates of the times, contribute to the historical reconstruction of economic thought on autarky and inflexible prices and their effects on the economy.
