For the first time, in its 153 years-long experience, Rivista Internazionale di Scienze Sociali devotes a special issue to Health Economics and Policy. This choice arises from the growing importance attributed nowadays to interventions aimed at increasing the levels of developed societies' health, as they are considered important drivers of economic growth and human capital development. Even more remarkable, in the current environment characterized by scientific and cultural debates involving multiple disciplines and social sciences' areas, is the need to offer a contribution able to provide potential solutions to complex problems arising in the analysis of the possible strategies a developed society could pursue when redesigning healthcare deliveries capable to interpret the real needs of a population according to their specific cultural perspective.
