An introduction to the Special Issue An overview, history and context for the consideration of risk in the built environment

This special issue, entitled Risk in the Built Environment, is dedicated to an understanding of the role of risk assessment and management in what is referred to as the built environment, i.e. the civil constructions that constitute the physical structures and infrastructure of communities. The particular aim of this issue is to share with the larger risk community the significant context of current risk views that are the culmination of research that began about 50 years ago on the safety of individual structures and infrastructure systems.
