In this paper, an adaptive error control (AEC) scheme is developed for a switched-and-stay combiner (SSC) of a dual-branch selection diversity receiver. It relies on a type-I hybrid combination of selective repeat SR-ARQ and BCH coding at the data link layer. The model is then called adaptive error control based switched-and-stay combiner (AEC-SSC) in mobile cellular networks. The aim is to provide maximal achievable throughput when AEC-SSC is employed in Rayleigh flat-fading channel. The results show that significant redundancy coding has a reasonable effect on the overall throughput performance. In contrary, the adaptive channel coding influences significantly on the lower range of operating channel SNR in hybrid ARQ compared to non-adaptive ARQ scheme.
