The book Discrete Wavelet Transformations: an Elementary Approach with Applications by P.J. Van Fleet begins with a short chapter entitled 'Why Wavelets?' The purpose of this chapter is to give the reader information about the mathematical history of wavelets, how wavelets are applied and why readers would want to learn about them. In Chapter 2, they review some basic ideas from linear algebra. Vectors and matrices are central tools in their development. They review vector inner products and norms, matrix algebra and block matrix arithmetic. Students rarely see a detailed treatment of block matrices in an introductory linear algebra course, and because the text makes heavy use of block matrices, it is important to treat this topic.
