Simulation of backup rolls quenching with experimental study of deep cryogenic treatment

The research goals of this work are to simulate the phase transformations in heat treatment of large-scale rolls of special alloy steels including deep cryogenic treatment (DCT) stage with experimental estimation of its influence on wear resistance of rolls. The adapted analytical models are introduced and applied for the calculation of phase transformations. Combination of finite-element models and experimental continuous cooling diagrams allowed determining the temperature and stress fields as well as each phase fraction in the special alloy steels 65Cr2Si3MoV, 50Cr5NiMoV and 70Cr3MnNiMoV at different stages of rolls manufacturing. Two short cycles of DCT conducted on samples showed increased by 39% wear resistance of 65Cr2Si3MoV alloy steel compared with its standard heat treatment schedule.
