While I enjoyed reading the recent editorial by Reinout Heijungs and agree with many of the points raised there, some of these issues require additional perspective or should at least be elaborated on. 1 would therefore like to offer my opinion on three specific topics: the difference between (or equivalence of) "system expansion" and "substitution," the ISO confor-mance of life cycle assessment (LCA) studies published in the Journal of Life Cycle Assessment (or elsewhere), and the use of the term "potential" when reporting impact category indicator results.
