The Basque Secret Service (1936-1945)

On 18 July 1936, a group of military officers commanded by General Francisco Franco rose up against the Spanish government of the Second Republic. The Basque Nationalist Party-Partido Nacionalista Vasco (PNV)-which had sided with the legal government of the Republic, negotiated the approval on 1 October of the Statute of Autonomy for the provinces of Alava, Guipuzcoa, and Vizcaya, the first chapter of self-government in the history of the Basque Country until July 1937.
