Looking for Killers

On 24 March 2016 the United Nations International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) convicted Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic of genocide and ten other counts. The judges at the tribunal, based in The Hague, deliberated for more than a year before reaching their verdict. In sentencing the 70-year-old Karadzic to 40 years in prison, they ensured that he would spend the rest of his life behind bars.~1 On the day of Karadzic's conviction, the tribunal acquitted Vojislav Seselj, the leader of the ultranationalist Radical Party, who was accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity. According to that verdict, Seselj had provided money and weapons to Serbian fighters but had not issued orders or commanded the forces who committed the atrocities.
