Studies are under way for a proposed project to raise the height of the San Vicente gravity dam in California, USA, by up to 30 m. This will be part of an emergency water storage project designed to remain operational in the event of a major seismic event. It is planned to use RCC, to minimize construction costs, and to save time. Design aspects of the project are discussed here. San Diego County Water Authority imports both treated and untreated water to San Diego County through aqueducts which cross several major fault lines. In recent years, more than 90 per cent of the County's water needs have been met by imported water delivered through these major aqueducts. Since a large earthquake could interrupt the County's imported water supply, the Authority is implementing an Emergency Storage Project (ESP) to endure a prolonged interruption of normal imported water deliveries without lasting economic or environmental damage to its service area.
