Measuring deformations in dam foundations

The behaviour and safety of a dam are closely associated with the performance of the dam and its foundation. Normally the average rock condition is not the cause of safety concerns, but rather the presence of deficiencies like weak zones, open joints and shear zones. Anomalies such as cracks in the dam body, excessive seepage and the occurrence of large deformations can be regarded as warning signals of decreasing dam integrity.
