The Sylvenstein dam, which provides flood protection for Bavaria, Germany, is to undergo an upgrade project, to ensure its stability. In May, the most extensive phase of the project went ahead, which included installing a 10 000 m2 diaphragm wall to seal the dam core, extending for a length of 170 m and reching a depth of 25 m beneath the dam into the former bed of the Isar river. A cutoff wall of this depth has not been constructed in Germany before, and this measure is being taken to ensure that the dam remains watertight. This work, scheduled for completion in November 2012, will be carried out by a Bauer BC 40 cutter unit mounted on a MC 128 base carrier, as well as two MC 64 foundation cranes for grab excavation and concreting. The contract is worth around € 11.5 million. The benefit of this dam, which is the largest single flood protection measure to be undertaken in Bavaria, was underlined by the State's Environment Minister, Dr Marcel Huber. He and Prof Thomas Bauer, Chairman of the specialist contractor for the cutoff, Bauer AG, celebrated the beginning of work on site on 25 May.
