Israel's first pumped-storaqe scheme moves ahead at Gilboa

The Israeli company PSP Investment Ltd has recently awarded two contracts to Alstom, relating to the planned 300 MW Gilboa pumped-storage plant, which is to be constructed about 60 km east of the city of Haifa. This will be the country's first pumped-storage plant. Alstom is to supply the two 150 MW pump-turbines, with the associated balance of plant equipment and a control system. The other contract is for operation and maintenance of the plant, over an 18 year period. The project is to be commissioned in 2018, and will increase the country's installed capacity by around 2.5 per cent. It will also serve to increase the reliability of electricity supply, and help to stabilize grid operation.
