DRC inaugurates Zongo II

The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Joseph Kabila, formally inaugurated the 150 MW Zongo II hydropower plant on the Congo river in Kongo Central province in late June. The plant was built by Sinohydro and financed by a US$ 360 million loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, which is also financing a high-voltage substation, under construction in Kinshasa-Kinsuka, to transmit power from Zongo to the capital. Work on Zongo II began in 2012, and was scheduled to be completed in December 2015, but construction was suspended in November 2014 after the DRC Government fell behind on payments for its share of the project.
