THE CHANGING ROLE OF TRADITION AND CULTURE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF JAPANESE HOUSING

For several centuries, culture and tradition has played a significant role in the design of residential architecture in Japan. Recently, however, the traditional wooden houses with tiled roofs, wooden walls and tatami-matted interiors are starting to decline and are being replaced with collective housing units which have modern designs and finishes often deviating form plans outlining tradition.
