In a literal sense, the multi-storey mill cast a shadow over its single-storey adjunct. The massive bulk of the mill also gave scope to the architectural imagination which was generally lacking in the single-storey shed. Historical interest has favoured the multi-storey mill and few members of this society will be unaware of the seminal work of Hamilton, Bannister and Skempton and Johnson in defining the part that the textile mill played in evolving the first iron frames. Thus whilst the technical morphology of the iron-framed mill has been relatively well defined, the weaving shed has passed virtually un-noticed. This imbalance is unfortunate for, in its own way, the north-light weaving shed represents a comparable building revolution.
