摘要

Traditionally, steel and concrete have been applied as primary structural materials for tall buildings, and wood has been used only for low-rise structures. Recently, numerous researches have been conducted around the world on the issue of applying wood to form skeleton of tall buildings. This is the first special issue of IJHRB in the field of Tall Timber Structures. A total of eight papers are included in this issue; six papers on the most recent development of tall timber structures, and two more papers on the structural design and construction of tall buildings. In this issue, Mr. Verhaegh and other engineers in Arup Amsterdam office presented the structural design of Haut, a 21-storey high-end residential development in Amsterdam. Mr. Hanai and engineers in Takenaka Co. presented their research on the developments of fire-resistant wooden structural components for high-rise buildings in Japan. Mr. Fernandez and two other engineers in Thornton Tomasetti described the structural design of a 25-storey residential tower located in Milwaukee, WI (USA), which will become the tallest timber building in the world upon completion. Prof. Voulpiotis and Frangi in ETH discussed the issues related to the robustness design of tall timber buildings. Mr. Harada and other engineers in Nikken Sekkei LTD explained their ideas on the development of 350m tall timber buildings. The article of Mr. Dubois and other engineers in Nordic Structures Montreal relates the challenges overcome by the designers and clients as they engaged with code officials, building authorities, and fire-service representatives to demonstrate the life-safety performance of tall wood buildings.
