The human ecology of any society often reflects distinctive values which other societies lack or which they treat with a different importance. Thus, the Chinese avoidance of conflict and mockery of anger - so useful in crowded conditions like Hong Kong and urban China generally - may be related to the Confucian principle of social subordination. But the social subordination which Indian society expects from lower castes towards higher castes is not admirable to non-Indians. It has a limited utility and is subject to abuse and consequent injustice.
