摘要

It is difficult to review adequately the huge legacy of David James Bellamy OBE, botanist, marine ecologist, television presenter, author and environmental campaigner. This tribute is based on my personal recollections. The 1960s was an exciting time in marine biology with the advent of scientific diving and David was in the vanguard of the use of the aqualung in underwater surveys, collections and experimentation. I first came across David through the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) after I co-founded the Special Branch at the University of Hull in 1966. David was already well established as a scientist after becoming a lecturer in the Botany Department of the University of Durham in 1960, teaching there until 1982. Initially he became a leader in the study of peat bogs (see the classic text Peatlands by P.D. Moore and D.J. Bellamy, 1973, HarperCollins) and in the study of the unique flora of Upper Teesdale with Margaret Bradshaw. By the late 1960s he was involved in marine research.
