Multi-regime leaching assessment model for the migration of the pollutants released from granular waste materials

It is commonplace to use waste materials in the construction applications that would otherwise be constructed by using natural resources. One of these wastes is incinerator bottom ash waste (IBAW). However, in the presence of water, constituents from IBAW could be released to groundwater and soil. In this study, an experimental program was designed to recreate a realistic environment of foundation layers by using a lysimeter. Mathematical modelling was used to simulate the release of constituents from IBAW based on the concept of the sorption and advection processes. Multi regime assessment model was then suggested from a combination of a selection of mathematical models to assess the leaching and migration of IBAW constituents in the lysimeter experiments and the field. Simulation results of SO4, Na and Cl using a multi-regime assessment model exhibited an excellent matching as the model efficiently depicted the experimental measurements of all positions along the lysimeter.
