COMMON PROPERTY RESOURCES MANAGEMENT IN INDIA: SOME REVIEW FINDINGS

In the present paper, a debate on the management of common property resources (CPRs) has been discussed in the light of Hardin 's Tragedy of Commons. The emergence of participatory forest resources management approach in India has also been analyzed. The issues and challenges in the management of the forest resources have been highlighted in the context of adoption of participatory management approach undertaken by the government of India since 1988. The literature on degradation and decline of forests has been reviewed in order to identify the possible principal factors responsible for the same. The paper also brings out the major determinants of CPR management institutions. The issue of efficiency and equity pertaining to CPR management institutions has been critically discussed. The role of socio-economic heterogeneity on the efficacy of CPR has been critically. The paper also focuses on the literature unearthing the relationship between the CPR institutions and stress migration.
