According to a report by the UK's Federation of Small Businesses (2011), 'Just under a quarter (23%) of FSB members say they have a long-standing illness, disability or infirmity'. For many disabled entrepreneurs, running their own business was the only option, 'Most disabled people of working age want to be independent. Research shows that 24 per cent of those in employment were self-employed, and 45 per cent of those chose to become self-employed because they could not find alternative employment' (FSB, 2011). To the able-bodied, coping with disability as well as starting a business may seem an insurmountable task, yet there are many success stories and some specialist support services to help reduce the barriers.
