This Special Issue of the International journal of Engineering Science, devoted to "Mechanics, Mathematics and Materials", is dedicated to the memory of AJ.M Spencer FRS. The Special Issue was originally planned to celebrate Tony Spencer's 80th birthday in August, 2009, but sadly he passed away suddenly. Tony Spencer was a remarkable applied mathematician who made seminal contributions to non-linear continuum mechanics and theoretical solid mechanics. His research in these areas ranged from fundamental contributions to practical applications covering finite elasticity theory, invariant and tensor function theory, theory of plasticity, mechanics of granular materials, continuum theories for fibre-reinforced solids and fluids, isotropic and anisotropic laminates and inhomogeneous and functionally-graded plates and shells.
