Route Planning of Municipal Solid Waste Management: A Methodology and Literature Review

Route planning is one of the most important operational decisions for any logistical system due to its significant influence on fuel consumption, cost minimization as well as carbon emissions. Researches for improved route planning have been contributed by both academics and practitioners during the past few decades. In this paper, methodologies and contemporary researches for route planning of municipal solid waste management are summarized. Municipal solid waste management system is a complex system that includes several different activities, e.g., waste collection, pre-processing, distribution, reuse, material recycling, energy recovery and disposal. The classification of types of route planning problems in municipal solid waste system is first discussed and methodologies of route planning with respect to different types of problems are then presented. Illustrations are given for a better insight of the route planning methodologies in the context of municipal solid waste management. Literature review and suggestions for future development are also given latter in this paper.
