Interaction of AM Fungi with Nitrogen-Fixing and Phosphorus-Solubilising Microorganisms: A Review

Mycorrhizal fungi are a part of soil biota and are ubiquitous in nature. Interactions of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi with rhizospheric microflora and the plant's root can be beneficial, neutral or detrimental. The type of interaction has been found to vary with the plant species, type of soil and the microflora present in the rhizosphere. No specific reason can be attributed to its diverse nature with respect to interaction with plants' root and microflora. In case of beneficial (P-solubilisers and Nitrogen fixers) interactions they have been reported to promote plant growth by aiding in nutrient absorption and building up the soil productivity. They can thus be used for reclaiming wastelands. Mycorrhizal fungi have vital role in this regard. However, to reclaim the wastelands on sustainable basis, AM fungi along with other microorganisms like P-solubilisers and N-fixers have to be exploited. In this respect, it was found important to review the interactions between AM fungi with other microorganisms and the implications of these interactions on plant growth.
