Regeneration of Rudraksh (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.)- a Threatened Tree Species: Germination Strategies

Propagation of Rudraksh (Elaeocarpus ganitrus Roxb.), an economically important tree, is affected by the stony endocarps that is impermeable to water. Germination of nuts was investigated by subjecting them to 25 different treatments. The study showed that the nuts can germinate within a month after mechanical scarification (cracking the endocarp by vise). A single nut produces one to four seedlings. The seedling growth wis significantly greater if only one seedling emerged from the nut.
