In the midst of a world transformed by coronavirus, the opening lines of Bianchi, Labory and Duran's introduction to this volume read as an understatement: 'The beginning of the twenty-first century is turning out to be full of disruptions and challenges for economies and societies' (1). While this book was conceived and written in a pre-COVID world, its observations and insights remain timely in helping to understand the challenges and opportunities that mark industrial policy development at the end of the second decade of the twenty-first century. The questions of how digitization, the reordering of global networks, climate change and the ongoing processes of recovery from the global financial crisis impact industrial policy, permeate this volume and remain pertinent as the world undergoes yet another significant disruption.
