It may now sound even ridiculous, but twenty years ago radio was seriously considered to be the spearhead of digitalization of all mass media. Large European electronics manufacturing companies and major public service broadcasters had started their joint effort for developing digital radio in the mid-1980s, several years before anyone really dared to even dream about digital television. Obviously, something has gone seriously wrong on the way to worldwide success, because radio can now be seen as 'the last bastion of traditional analog mass media', like the author frames the state of audio broadcasting in the opening chapter of this book.
