Since his childhood, Roland, just like his father Wolfgang and his grandfather Johan, was very interested in art, but kept it in the background where he could indulge this passion now and again without interfering with his first love which was science. Roland was actively involved in painting, which led to an exhibition of his work being held in Monheim au Rhein.Roland was born in Berlin on 2nd August 1941 and in 1942 the family moved to Prague where his father, a renowned aeronautical engineer, lived out his days in charge of the German Aerospace Institute. From 1947, the family moved to a town close to Belgrade in Serbia and in 1952 Roland started his mechanical engineering studies at Berlin Technical University from where he graduated in 1968.
