DSSH: Digital signature based secure handover for network-based mobility management

As a network-based mobility management protocol, Proxy Mobile IPv6 (PMIPv6) has been recently standardized. Since PMIPv6 requires minimal functionalities for a resource-constrained mobile node (MN), communication service providers have been showing strong interest in PMIPv6. While fast handover extensions to PMIPv6 are being developed to improve the handover performance, there have been little attentions paid to developing secure handover mechanisms. Without being secured, PMIPv6 and its fast handover extensions are obviously vulnerable to various security threats. In this paper, we propose a generic digital signature based secure handover (DSSH), which protects PMIPv6 as well as the fast handover extensions. The proposed mechanism relying on digital signatures is explicitly illustrated with handover procedures and formally verified through BAN-Logic. The analytical performance analysis is also conducted to demonstrate each protocol's handover latency.
