Ioannis Deligiannis, Fifteenth-Century Latin Translations of Lucian’s Essay on Slander, Studia Erudita I (Pisa and Rome: Gruppo Editoriale Internazionale, 2006), 390 pp.
Many renaissance Latin translations were regularly reprinted for the benefitnof scholars with imperfect Greek until the second half of the nineteenth cen-ntury. Such scholars read their Plato in Latin until well into the century: a re-nvision of the fifteenth-century version of Marsilio Ficino was printed with thencomplete works in the Bipontine edition of 1781-87, the London edition ofn1826, and the Paris edition of 1846-73. Even today, their presence persists.nThose who consult Migne’s Patrologia Graeca will come across many of thesenversions printed alongside the Greek text; those who use the Berlin Aristotlenwill find that a full set of fifteenth and sixteenth century versions fill the finalnvolume; and the popular Firmin-Didot editions of classical authors, still onnthe shelves of many institutional libraries, often reproduce early Latin ver-nsions beside their Greek text. Indeed, for many of the more obscure works innGreek, renaissance Latin versions are still the only ones available.
