This thoroughly solid and highly recommendable volume originated as a col-nloquium of well known experts at the Warburg Institute in May 2000. The ed-nitors purposely refrained from giving defini tions either of the ‘classicalntradition’ or of ‘magic’, thus allowing for a large variety of perspectives. Allncontributions are in English (except for one in Ita lian). They cover the periodnfrom ca. 500 to 1900 CE and contain a host of new materials, including fourncritical editions of hitherto unpublished texts. I shall give brief appraisals ofneach single contribution.
