Editorial

It is a great honour for me to take over from Colin Baker as the editor of this journal. Colin has done a sterling job in building up this journal to make it one of the outstanding international platforms for researchers with an interest in bilingualism and bilingual education. Colin became bilingual after marriage. I have had no such choice, having been raised bilingually from birth. I grew up speaking French at home and Dutch everywhere else in Bruges, Belgium. My interest in bilingualism thus comes from personal experience, and I remember my puzzlement when some of my Flemish school peers criticised me for speaking French with family members rather than the local dialect as they did. I was equally puzzled when my parents insisted that my sister, brother and I should speak Dutch only when a couple of particularly Flemish-minded friends came over for a dinner.
