Yamato Industry Ltd. was founded in 1942 and a Daini Seikosha Ltd. branch plant was set in 1943 to manufacture precision devices including watches in a natural Swiss-like environment near Suwa Lake. The two merged as Suwa Seikosha Ltd. in 1959, and renamed Seiko Epson Corporation in 1985. The corporation has become famous for its excellent production of Seiko watch production, releasing the world's first quartz watch, the Astron 35SO in 1969.
