Technology is more, much more, than what people calltools. It embodies knowledge pertinent to the making of things (material or not). Technology is the shorthand for the what and how of our actions, whether our making involves body, mind, or both, tools, materials, energy, etc. Consequently, technology reflects our view of the world; moreover, it influences the understanding of ourselves, and even the further development of technology. This refers, of course, also to computations, regardless of whether computers are involved or not in processing them. The succession of epistemological metaphors can inform our understanding of the process of knowledge acquisition.
