UK's Big 6 must earn profit

UK energy companies are not entitled to make a profit from the retail supply arms of the business, but should earn profit through greater efficiency within a competitive market, energy regulator Ofgem's interim CEO, Andrew Wright, said November 26. Wright was appearing before UK lawmakers where he denied that the regulator approves of the recent round of price hikes from the UK's Big 6 energy suppliers. "I have not said that [a 5% profit margin] is right or acceptable nor have I approved it," he told the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Select Committee hearing.
