BNP Paribas has made as-yet-undisclosed cuts to its balance sheet as it prepares to pay a US$8.9bn fine for breaching US sanctions, analysts believe, with bosses trimming back on risk-weighted assets in order to avoid investors losing their dividend while keeping up capital ratios. The French bank shocked most analysts in choosing not to zero its dividend, instead opting to push the cost of paying the mammoth fine onto its capital base so as not to inflict further pain on shareholders, who have seen the value of their investment drop by a fifth since February.
