JP Morgan sells commodities unit

JP Morgan has reached an agreement to sell its physical commodities business to mercuria energy croup for US$3.5bn in cash. The bank's ambitious five-year push to cement its position as one of the leading Wall Street commodity players came to an abrupt end last July, when increased regulatory scrutiny, higher capital charges and two years of dismal returns took their toll on the business.
