IT spending to rise to US$100bn by 2018

Firms in the financial industry are set to spend more than US$100bn on information technology by 2018, with industry professionals expecting banks, asset managers and hedge funds to increase spending by more than 6% a year between now and then. Although spending has gradually been increasing in recent years, the rate of increase expected is more than double that seen since 2010, according to a study from financial services technology analysis provider Ovum. Firms spent US$76bn last year, but that figure is expected to grow by US$6bn every year from 2014 to 2018. Ovum's study collected data from 250 first- and second-tier financial institutions scattered around the world. Daniel Mayo, a practice leader of financial services technology at the firm, said there were a number of factors driving the renewed growth.
