Cost controls boost BNP Paribas investment bank profits

BNP paribas bounced back in the second quarter from its disastrous period a year ago, when the French bank booked a €5.95bn charge relating to fines from the US authorities. US-related matters indirectly helped the bank during the three months as the strong dollar largely boosted pre-tax profits at the corporate and institutional banking business by 26% to €lbn. Even stripping out currency effects, it reported a 12.4% rise.
