Whenever A high-profile film is released, the financial analyst community - and for that matter, the journalistic one - is usually not far behind in exploiting its title for headline-grabbing effect. The current favourite is, of course, "50 Shades of Grey", the adaptation of the bestselling S&M novel that has become a global phenomenon. One such effort came on February 10 when UBS's rates team published a note entitled "50 Shades of Tightening". This had nothing to do with how to get kinky with cable ties, but was instead a headline to a discursive piece on the likely impact of the Fed hiking rates on the broader market. TD Securities, on the other hand, went for the less ambitious "50 Shades of Fed", which was presumably designed to put the "0" into the FoMC. Goldman took a different tack, referring to the "29 shades of our allocation model", a title that is either surreal or suggests they haven't read the book.
