The chairman of China's banking regulator sent a strong signal to banks last week that it would step up oversight of shadow banking, as he warned of a "black swan" event that could derail the country's financial system. His comments came shortly after the China Banking Regulatory Commission published tough new rules to force banks to better identify their credit exposure to investments in structured products.
