Germany's green bond highlights ESG ambitions

GERMANY'S planned green bond debut will establish a new reference point for pricing green debt, but the deal also includes a range of ESG initiatives that highlight Germany's ambitions in sustainable finance. The deal will set the tone and standard for sustainable debt in the second half of the year, and Germany's prioritisation of international aid, research and innovation and biodiversity are being singled out in particular as advancing the international ESG agenda and defining best practice. Germany classified spending in its framework of more than €12.7bn from seven ministries as green expenditure across five sectors: transport; international cooperation; research, innovation and awareness raising; energy and industry; and agriculture, forestry and natural landscapes.
